Border Bomb Defused
Explosive experts have defused a 600lb bomb close to the border, ending a week long security alert in the area.
The device was discovered close to Forkhill, in Co Armagh last Tuesday, following a telephone warning. Nearby homes were later evacuated.
It is believed dissident republicans planted the bomb, which had a command wire running from where it was planted in Northern Ireland to a firing point across the border.
PSNI Chief Inspector Sam Cordner said local residents and security teams had been put at "significant risk".
"Their [the terrorist's] actions were reckless and dangerous in the extreme. Their target may have been the police, but they did not care who they killed or injured," he said.
Mr Cordner paid tribute to the "hard work and professionalism" of his police colleagues and military experts.
Specialists have removed the bomb remains from the scene. It is believed the explosive was homemade and fertiliser-based, similar to those found in Castlewellan, Co Down and Rosslea in Fermanagh earlier this year.
