Children's care homes provide accommodation and day-to-day care for children and young people who cannot live with their families, including some who are looked after by a local authority. They may offer short-term, longer-term or specialist residential placements, depending on the child's needs. Care is usually organised around an individual care plan, with staff providing supervision, emotional support and help with routines such as meals, personal care and keeping safe. Staff also support children's health, education and development, working with social workers, schools, health professionals and families where appropriate. Services can include help to maintain family contact, build life skills and take part in activities. Homes are regulated and inspected by the relevant authority in each UK nation; in England, children's homes are registered with Ofsted.
