Architect, Northern Ireland

Architects plan and design new buildings, extensions and alterations, balancing a client's needs with the site, budget, planning requirements and building regulations. They may work on homes, commercial premises, public buildings or other structures. Typical early services include discussing the brief, assessing a site, preparing feasibility studies and developing design options, often using drawings, models and digital plans to explain proposals. An architect can prepare plans and supporting documents for planning permission and building regulations approval, coordinate information from engineers and other specialists, and produce detailed drawings and specifications for construction. Depending on the appointment, they may also help select a builder, administer the building contract and monitor progress on site. In the UK, "architect" is a protected title: people using it must be registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB).
