Bricklayers build, repair and alter walls and other structures using materials such as bricks, blocks and stone. They prepare foundations or supporting surfaces, measure and set out the work, mix mortar and lay masonry in patterns that provide the required strength and finish. Projects can include house extensions, garden walls, garages, chimneys, boundary walls and structural or decorative features in residential, commercial and public buildings. Customers may use a bricklayer for new construction, repointing worn mortar joints, replacing damaged bricks, rebuilding unstable sections or making alterations to existing masonry. Work can involve matching the colour, size and bond of older materials, fitting lintels and forming openings for doors or windows. Bricklayers may work from architectural drawings or instructions from a builder, and coordinate with other trades where masonry forms part of a larger building project.
