Tilers install, replace and repair tiles on floors, walls and other surfaces in homes and commercial premises. Their work may cover kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, hallways, shops and offices, using materials such as ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass and mosaic tiles. Some tilers specialise in particular materials or settings, while others undertake a range of indoor and outdoor projects. A typical job includes measuring the area, planning the layout and preparing the surface so tiles can be fixed securely and evenly. Preparation may involve removing old coverings, levelling floors, repairing walls or applying suitable waterproofing in wet areas. Tilers cut tiles to fit edges, corners and fixtures, then apply adhesive, grout and, where appropriate, sealant. They may also advise on tile suitability and quantities, and coordinate their work with plumbers, electricians or bathroom installers.
