Chiropodists, also known as podiatrists, assess and treat conditions affecting the feet and lower limbs. They provide routine foot care such as trimming and managing thickened or difficult nails, removing hard skin and treating corns and calluses. Depending on their training and services, they may also treat verrucae, fungal nail problems and ingrown toenails, or advise on foot hygiene, footwear and preventing recurring problems. Some practices offer assessments for foot pain, walking difficulties and changes in foot shape, with advice or referrals where needed. They may provide insoles or orthoses, treat sports-related foot problems, and offer foot health checks for people with conditions such as diabetes, where circulation and sensation can affect the risk of complications. In the UK, the titles chiropodist and podiatrist are protected and practitioners using them must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
