A Minor Injury Unit is a healthcare service for assessing and treating injuries that need prompt attention but are not usually life-threatening. Units are commonly staffed by nurses and may also have doctors or other clinicians. The injuries they can manage vary between services, but often include cuts and wounds, sprains and strains, minor burns and scalds, bites, and suspected minor fractures or dislocations. Care may include examination, wound cleaning and dressing, stitches or other wound closure, pain relief advice, and support with managing an injury at home. Some units can arrange X-rays, while others may refer patients elsewhere for imaging or further treatment. Services, opening hours and whether patients can attend without an appointment differ by location. Minor Injury Units are not intended for severe or life-threatening problems, such as chest pain, serious breathing difficulties, major bleeding or significant head injuries, which require emergency care.
