Fire safety consultants advise businesses, landlords and other organisations on reducing the risk of fire and protecting people and property. A central service is carrying out fire risk assessments, which consider potential sources of ignition and fuel, people who may be at risk, existing precautions and any further measures needed. Consultants may also review fire safety arrangements in workplaces, shops, rented buildings, care settings and other premises. Work can include preparing or reviewing fire safety policies, emergency and evacuation plans, staff procedures and fire safety records. Consultants may assess escape routes, signage, emergency lighting, alarms, fire doors and firefighting equipment, and recommend improvements or further specialist inspections. Some provide staff training, evacuation exercises, compliance audits and advice during building alterations or changes in use.
