Council Services, Northern Ireland

Council services are the public services and administrative functions provided by local authorities in the areas they serve. Depending on the type of council and its responsibilities, these can include collecting council tax, arranging household waste and recycling collections, maintaining local roads and public spaces, processing planning applications and issuing licences. Councils also provide information about local facilities, elections, parking and community services. Residents may contact a council about housing advice, homelessness support, social care, benefits, schools, environmental health or support for children and families. Councils can also help businesses with matters such as trading standards, food safety and local licensing. The services available, and which authority provides them, vary across the UK; some responsibilities are shared between councils or delivered through other public bodies.
