Housing Associations, Northern Ireland
Housing associations are independent social landlords that provide and manage homes for people who may not be able to access suitable housing through the private market. Many are not-for-profit organisations, although their legal structures and services vary. Their homes can include social and affordable rented properties, sheltered or supported housing, and homes for people with particular needs. Some also offer shared ownership, allowing eligible buyers to purchase a share of a property and pay rent on the remaining share. Their work commonly includes assessing housing applications, allocating homes under relevant eligibility and local rules, managing tenancies and collecting rent. Residents can usually contact their landlord about repairs, safety checks, communal areas, antisocial behaviour and tenancy changes. Some associations provide advice or support to help residents sustain their tenancies, live independently or access other services.
