Library And Archives Activities, Northern Ireland
Businesses and organisations in library and archives activities collect, organise, preserve and provide access to books, documents and other recorded information. Libraries may be public, academic, school, specialist or privately run. Their services can include lending books and other media, providing reference materials and study space, managing reading rooms, and helping visitors locate information through catalogues and staff assistance. Some also offer access to newspapers, journals, databases, e-books and computers. Archive services preserve records of lasting historical, legal or administrative value, such as letters, photographs, maps, plans, business records and public documents. Staff may catalogue and describe collections, advise researchers, supervise access to original material and provide copies or digital versions. Related work can include document storage, digitisation, conservation and the management of records for organisations.
