Northern Ireland Assembly Members, often known as MLAs, are elected representatives who sit in the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont. They represent constituencies and take part in making laws and decisions on matters devolved to Northern Ireland, such as health, education, housing, agriculture and local government. Assembly Members may belong to a political party or serve as independents, and their work includes debating proposals, voting on legislation and examining the Northern Ireland Executive's policies and spending. Members also help constituents raise concerns with public bodies and navigate issues such as benefits, housing, health services or education. This can involve providing information, making enquiries on a constituent's behalf and referring people to appropriate organisations. Assembly Members may serve on committees that scrutinise departments and particular policy areas, and can take part in cross-community procedures used for some Assembly decisions.
