Opticians, Northern Ireland

Opticians provide eye care and optical products, usually through a practice where customers can have their vision assessed and obtain spectacles or contact lenses. Eye examinations are carried out by optometrists, who check vision and examine the health of the eyes. They may identify signs of eye conditions or other health concerns and arrange referral to an ophthalmologist or another healthcare service when further assessment is needed. Optometrists and dispensing opticians are regulated in the UK by the General Optical Council. Practices typically offer sight tests, advice on vision correction and help choosing frames and lenses. Dispensing staff use a prescription to fit and supply spectacles, including options such as single-vision, bifocal and varifocal lenses. Many opticians also provide contact lens fittings, trial lenses and guidance on safe use and care.
