Building Societies, Northern Ireland

Building societies are financial institutions that are owned by their members rather than outside shareholders. People who hold eligible savings accounts or mortgages are generally members, although membership rights and eligibility depend on the society's rules. Building societies use members' savings and other funding to provide mortgage lending, and operate under financial services regulation in the UK. Customers can typically expect savings products such as easy-access, notice and fixed-term accounts, as well as cash ISAs. Many societies offer mortgages for home buyers, existing homeowners and people remortgaging; the available types and eligibility criteria vary. Some also provide current accounts, payment cards, online banking and related services, but these are not available from every society. Deposits with authorised building societies are generally protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, subject to its rules and limits.
