Primary Education, Northern Ireland
Primary education covers schools that provide the first stages of formal learning for children, usually from around age four or five until age 11 or 12. The structure and age ranges differ across the UK, but provision commonly includes nursery or reception classes for younger children and successive year groups leading to transfer to secondary education. Schools may be state-funded, independent, faith-based or organised around a particular educational approach. Teaching typically includes English, mathematics, science, humanities, arts, physical education and, where offered, modern languages and computing. Lessons build children's knowledge, communication, practical skills and confidence, with progress assessed through classroom work and other assessments. Schools also support children's wellbeing, social development and readiness for the next stage of education.
