Primary Schools, Northern Ireland
Primary schools provide education for children in the early and primary years, usually from around age four or five to age eleven. Most pupils attend a reception class followed by Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, covering subjects such as English, mathematics, science, computing, history, geography, art, music and physical education. Schools may be state-funded, including community, voluntary-aided or academy schools, or fee-paying independent schools. Arrangements and curriculum details can vary across the UK and between schools. Alongside classroom teaching, primary schools typically support children's social development, wellbeing and readiness for secondary education. They may provide additional help for pupils with special educational needs or disabilities, and work with families and specialist services where appropriate. Many offer school meals, breakfast or after-school clubs, and extracurricular activities, though provision differs.
