Private hospitals provide medical assessment, treatment and care outside the standard NHS hospital pathway. Services vary by hospital and may include consultations with specialists, diagnostic tests such as imaging and blood tests, planned operations, day-case procedures and inpatient treatment. Some offer maternity care, cancer services, rehabilitation or mental health treatment, while others focus on particular specialties. Patients may be treated by consultants who also work in the NHS, or by clinicians whose practice is based mainly in private healthcare. Care is commonly funded through private medical insurance or paid for by the patient, although some private hospitals also provide services commissioned by the NHS. Before treatment, patients are typically given information about the proposed care, expected length of stay and any follow-up arrangements.
