Quantity surveyors manage the costs and commercial aspects of building and construction projects, from early planning through to completion. They help clients assess whether a project is financially viable, prepare cost plans and budgets, estimate quantities of materials and work, and compare design options. Depending on the project, they may work for clients, contractors, developers or public bodies. Their services can include preparing bills of quantities and tender documents, advising on procurement and construction contracts, assessing bids, and monitoring spending as work progresses. They also check payment applications, value completed work, assess the cost of changes and delays, and prepare final accounts. Some provide life-cycle cost advice or support with contractual claims and disputes. Many quantity surveyors are chartered members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), although qualifications and services vary between practitioners.
