Recycling, Northern Ireland

Recycling businesses collect, sort and process materials that would otherwise be discarded, preparing them for reuse or manufacture into new products. Common materials include paper and cardboard, glass, metals, plastics, wood, textiles and electrical equipment. Services may cover regular collections from homes and businesses, one-off clearances, container or skip provision, and the handling of separated materials at recycling facilities. At a processing site, waste is checked and sorted by material, sometimes using machinery as well as manual inspection. Materials may then be cleaned, shredded, baled or otherwise prepared for reprocessing. Some businesses specialise in particular waste streams, such as scrap metal, batteries, construction waste or electronic equipment, which can require separate handling. They may also provide waste audits, recycling reports and advice on separating materials.
