Sawmills process felled trees and logs into sawn timber for use in construction, joinery, furniture making, fencing and other applications. They typically receive logs, assess and sort them by species, size and condition, then use machinery such as band saws or circular saws to cut them into boards, beams, planks, posts and other specified sections. Some mills work mainly with locally sourced or sustainably managed timber, while others handle a range of imported species. Depending on their facilities, sawmills may also provide log conversion to customer dimensions, timber grading, kiln drying, air drying, planing and preservative treatment. Products can include rough-sawn or finished softwood and hardwood, as well as slabs and specialist sections. Offcuts, bark and sawdust may be used for products such as wood chips, animal bedding or biomass fuel. Customers may include builders, timber merchants, manufacturers, landowners and private individuals needing timber cut from their own logs.
