Secondary Schools, Northern Ireland
Secondary schools provide education for pupils after primary school, typically from age 11 to 16, though some also teach younger pupils or offer sixth-form education up to age 18. They may be state-funded schools, including academies and maintained schools, or independent schools. Teaching usually follows a broad curriculum covering subjects such as English, maths, science, humanities, languages, arts and physical education, with the range varying by school. Pupils commonly prepare for GCSEs or other qualifications at age 16. Schools with sixth forms may provide A-levels, vocational courses or other post-16 programmes. Alongside lessons, provision can include careers guidance, pastoral support, extracurricular activities and additional help for pupils with special educational needs or disabilities. Admissions arrangements, curriculum choices, facilities and the availability of post-16 study vary between schools.
