Special Schools, Northern Ireland
Special schools provide education for children and young people whose special educational needs or disabilities mean that a mainstream setting may not be suitable for some or all of their education. They may support pupils with learning disabilities, autism, communication needs, sensory or physical impairments, social, emotional and mental health needs, or complex combinations of needs. Schools vary in the age groups and needs they serve, and may be day schools or offer residential provision. Teaching is adapted to pupils' abilities, communication styles and support requirements. Alongside academic subjects and life skills, provision may include small classes, individual learning plans, specialist equipment and assistance with personal care. Some schools have access to speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy or other specialist support, although arrangements differ.
