Vehicle test centres carry out Ministry of Transport (MOT) tests to check whether vehicles meet the required standards for road safety and environmental emissions. Tests are conducted by approved testers at Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) authorised testing stations. The vehicles covered depend on the centre's approval and equipment, and may include cars, light vans, motorcycles and other vehicle classes. An MOT inspection examines items such as brakes, steering, lights, tyres, seat belts, body structure, registration plates and emissions. The tester records whether the vehicle passes or fails and may note defects that need attention or items to monitor. A valid MOT certificate is generally required annually once a vehicle reaches the relevant age, although requirements vary by vehicle type. Some centres also offer repairs or re-tests, but these services are not part of every test centre's provision.
