Vets, Northern Ireland

Veterinary practices provide medical care for animals, most commonly pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals. Some also treat farm animals, horses, birds or exotic pets. Veterinary surgeons assess an animal's health, diagnose illness or injury and advise owners on treatment, welfare, feeding and general care. Veterinary surgeons practising in the UK must be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Typical services include health checks, vaccinations, parasite prevention, microchipping, neutering and dental care. Practices may carry out blood and urine tests, take X-rays or scans, prescribe medicines, dress wounds and perform surgery. Many offer ongoing care for long-term conditions, as well as help with injuries and urgent illness; out-of-hours emergencies may be handled by the practice or an external veterinary service. Where specialist investigation or treatment is needed, a vet can arrange referral to another provider.
