Street Boozing Targeted
Nottingham could become the first city in England and Wales to have a total ban on street drinking. The council is looking at by-laws to make it illegal to drink alcohol on every city street, park and open space. There are already three zones in the city with bans in place but officials said a wider restriction would be more effective at curbing problem behaviour.
Beware Sweet Tooth Kids
Children who eat sweets every day are more likely to be aggressive as adults than those who do not, according to a new study. Research, published in the October issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry, is the first to examine the long-term effects of childhood diet on adult violence. Analysis of almost 17,500 participants in the 1970 British Cohort Study found that 10-year-olds who ate confectionery daily were significantly more likely to have been convicted for violence between the ages of 29 and 34.
M&S Boss Defends Big Business
The boss of Marks & Spencer has hit out at Gordon Brown's recent attack on the free market, which formed a key part of the prime minister's speech to the Labour party conference on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Sir Stuart Rose, Chairman of M&S, urged the government to "make sure that business is not demonised" to win popularity ahead of next year's general election and said that, despite the banking crisis, there was nothing intrinsically wrong with the capitalist system of economics and politics.
Car Mat Death Tragedy
Toyota is recalling almost four million vehicles in the US amid fears that a problem with a floor mat could lead to a fatal car crash. There is a risk of the mat on the driver's side causing the accelerator to stick which is thought to have led to a family's death in a terrifying 120mph crash when the accelerator on their Lexus became stuck. "A stuck-open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop a vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death," Toyota spokesman Irv Miller said, advising owners to remove the front floor mats from their cars.
