Murder Investigation Into John Palmer's Death
A murder investigation has been launched into the death of John 'Goldfinger' Palmer.
The 64-year-old, from South Weald, was found by his family at an address in Sandpit Lane, Esse, shortly before 6.30pm on Wednesday 24 June.
His death was not initially thought to be suspicious, but a post-mortem has now revealed that the convicted was shot in the chest.
A murder investigation has now been launched by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.
DCI Simon Werrett, who is leading the investigation, said: "My team would like to speak to anybody who was around Sandpit Lane between 4pm and 6pm on Wednesday June 24. The area is rural but is often used by dog walkers and joggers.
"Did you see any people or suspicious vehicles in the area? Did you witness anything out of the ordinary? Officers are at the scene making enquiries and I would urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward."
Palmer was jailed for eight years in 2001 for masterminding a timeshare fraud targeting thousands of people across the UK. He was previously cleared of handling gold from the Brinks Mat bullion raid at Heathrow Airport in 1983, but he received the nickname 'Goldfinger' for his alleged involvement.
Anyone with information regarding Mr Palmer's death is asked to contact police.
