Further Birmingham Football Arrests

West Midlands police have arrested 19 men in connection with the disorder in Birmingham city centre after last month's Blues-Villa derby.

All have been charged with violent disorder over the fights which marred the aftermath of the Premiership game.

Detectives appealed to the city's media to help catch 22 people suspected of involvement in the trouble, which spilled over into Digbeth and the city centre after the game.

But officers today warned that there would be further arrests within the next fortnight thanks to the "magnificent" response of the people of Birmingham.

Det Insp Simon Vowles said: "The reaction from people was frankly overwhelming. We have made a significant number of arrests – and there will be more to come.

"Most people who rang us said they were disgusted by it and felt they had to act because they were sick of seeing their city's reputation ruined."

Nineteen of the men were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday of this week and charged with violent disorder.

Thirteen men claiming to be fans of Birmingham City will go before city magistrates on October 9 while a further six Villa supporters will appear on the 12th.

Just four of the original 22 CCTV images released to the media have yet to be positively identified as having suspected involvement in the trouble.

Det Insp Vowles said: "The sheer weight and speed of response from the public sends a clear message that this kind of disorder will not be tolerated.

"So called fans might think they have got away with it if they are not arrested on the day but we have a strong memory and will find them in the end."

He added: "This operation should make the kind of people who believe they can act without any repercussions, think twice in future."
