Posties Strike

Postal workers in London are walking out in the latest of a series of strikes. Thousands of Royal Mail staff have stopped work for 24 hours in protest to changes to pay and conditions. It comes as the Communication Workers Union voted for a national strike - a move denounced as "suicidal" by Business Secretary Lord Mandelson. At its highest, there has been a backlog of 15 million undelivered letters in London since the strikes began in June.

Sex Attacker Foiled

Police have praised a woman in Wales after she fought off an attacker whose motives were believed to be sexual. The incident took place while the woman was walking along the A4068 in Upper Cwmtwrch, Powys, near the river bridge, between 5am and 7am on Monday. She was pushed to the ground by the man but resisted the assault. Shortly afterwards, the attacker ran off towards Ystradgynlais town centre. He is described as being in his 20s, of slim build and wearing dark clothing.

Five-Year Low On Inflation

Inflation slumped to a five-year low during September, suggesting that interest rates in the UK may stay lower for longer than expected. The Consumer Prices Index fell from 1.6% to 1.1% over the month, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Ministers Warned Not To Stall Housing Recovery

The Home Builders Federation Chairman Stewart Baseley has told Housing Minister John Healey that it was vital support was maintained for housing development in the Pre Budget Report and warned Shadow Minister Grant Shapps that Tory localism plans had to be controlled. Mr Shapps and Mr Healey both told the audience of assembled housebuilders that their respective party's would increase house building if elected, but by very different routes, as major policy differences emerged and housing issues shaped up to become a major battleground in the run up to the next election. Mr Healey reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the industry, whilst Mr Shapps detailed how his party would fix the 'broken' planning system to facilitate more house building.

Bitter Row Ensues As Postal Strike Continues
A bitter war of words has erupted between the Royal Mail and the Communication Workers' Union as the postal strike continues. Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier rubbished CWU's claims that the way the firm treated its employees was like "slavery". Mr Crozier accused the union of talking "cobblers".
