Extension On Terrorism Arrests
Counter terrorism police in north west England has been granted an extension to question five men arrested as part of an ongoing investigation.
All the men aged, 52, 21, 62, 27 and 26, have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences including inciting an act of terrorism overseas.
Warrants of further detention have been granted, which means police can continue to question the men in custody until Monday 23 November.
Searches of addresses in Manchester, Bolton and Stalybridge are continuing.
Assistant Chief Constable Dave Thompson said his officers were aware that this is an "incredibly sensitive time" for the communities affected and that they are keen for a resolution as soon as possible.
"The arrests were the result of 15 months of investigation and having now made those arrests, it is important that those arrested are given an opportunity to answer questions concerning these issues," he said.
"We have been granted an extension after a rigorous and independent scrutiny by the court. I would stress that we will not keep anyone in custody longer than is absolutely necessary and this will be continually under review throughout the next seven days."
ACC Thompson added: "I would also like to reassure communities that we are continuing to work closely with local partners and key contacts to ensure that any relevant information is shared as quickly as possible."
