Bumper John Lewis Sales
UK retailer John Lewis has reported its most successful festive sales figures.
The department store chain made £500.8m in revenue during the five weeks proceeding 2 January.
This represented a 12.7% growth in like-for-like sales performance on last Christmas.
John Lewis attributed its success to "excellent" Christmas and clearance trading.
Its supermarket business, Waitrose, also performed well.
John Lewis said fashion sales within its department stores were up 22%, while there was a 19% growth in home goods. Electrical products and home technologies experienced a 11% jump.
However, managing director Andy Street described the sales leap as a possible "purple patch".
"The figures are good but that's probably not going to be sustained. It's a purple patch," he told the BBC.
"Looking into 2010 we think that with higher taxes coming in we're not going to see these figures continue."
According to market researchers Experian, Boxing Day shopper numbers in general jumped 18.5% compared to last year.
John Lewis did not open on 26 December, however, high street competitor Next did.
The Next chain reported a 3.2% sales growth during the festive period.
