Fire Death Not Suspicious

Essex Fire Service was called to the fire in a semi-detached house in Pines Road, Chelmsford, in the early hours where a man in his 60s was found dead. The police and fire service have started an investigation into the cause of the fire, which started at 4.15am. A spokesman said: "Crews reported that the fire was 100% well alight when they arrived at the scene." There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

Met Cops Go Green

Guns, knives and ammunition are among the huge variety of items recycled over the last year by the Metropolitan Police Service in an ongoing drive to contribute to a greener London. Among the rubbish and waste products turned back into useful material were thousands of seized guns and knives, melted down for reuse by the construction industry, including at the prestigious Olympics site at Stratford. And the lead, brass and aluminium from used ammunition at the Met's firing ranges has been turned into everyday items like jewellery and photo frames. Approximately 40 tonnes of police uniform were also recycled - including kevlar body armour refashioned for use in the manufacture of cars - and over 20,000 litres of cooking oil from the dozens of canteens operated by the Met became green biodiesel fuel.

Approval Due For Scottish Power Line

The Scottish Government is set to approve controversial plans for the £400m Beauly to Denny power line. Ministers are due to outline conditions for the scheme which would see a line of 600 giant pylons spanning the Highlands to central Scotland carrying electricity generated by renewable power projects to the national grid. The 200ft pylons, carrying in total 400,000 volts , would be placed from Beauly, west of Inverness, to Denny, near Falkirk. The 137-mile project, due to replace the existing 132kV line, has been the subject of a public inquiry and received more than 18,000 objections.

Wales 'True Grit'

Grit supplies are running low in many councils across Wales as more warnings of snow and icy conditions are forecast. An all-Wales severe weather warning remained in place after sub-zero temperatures left roads icy overnight. More than 300 schools were closed due to the bad weather. The Welsh Ambulance Service has also warned it was having difficulty attending calls in north Wales and urged people only to dial 999 in a genuine emergency.
