Bosch Welsh Jobs Go

A car part manufacturing plant is to close in south Wales with the loss of 900 jobs, it has been confirmed.

Bosch had made its intention to scale back operations known for sometime.

It had considered either reducing staff by 300 workers or closing the Vale of Glamorgan site completely.

Bosch said it will now recommend closure to its board, with work being transferred to Hungary by 2011.

Unions and staff have until February to thrash out redundancy agreements with management.

Company chief Stefan Asenkerschbaumer said he "deeply regretted" that a "solution" could not be found for the plant.

"I know first-hand the dedication and commitment of the employees here," said Mr Asenkerschbaumer, the former plant manager.

"Therefore, this is for me personally one of the toughest decisions in my career."

In 2008, the firm laid off 600 contracted and agency staff at the site.

Unite's David Lewis said the union had asked Bosch to reconsider its latest decision, but the company insisted it had exhausted all means.

"The truth is that when the company made the (consultation) announcement in October of last year that the vast majority of employees felt there wasn't too much that we could do," said Mr Lewis.

The Welsh Assembly has pledged its full support to the workers.

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones described the announcement as "deeply disappointing" news.

"If this decision goes through, we will continue to do everything possible to help those affected, whether it is helping them find new jobs or gain new skills so they can start alternative careers," he said.
