Rape Case Cops Rapped

A proper police investigation could have prevented some of serious sex attacks carried out by a taxi driver, the Independent Police Complaints Commission has said. Five police officers have been disciplined over an inquiry into sex assault claims against a taxi driver, John Worboys who was jailed indefinitely in 2009 for raping one woman and attacking others in his London black cab. He is thought to have assaulted 100 women. It has emerged that seven rapes were after police made Worboys a prime suspect, but did not initially search his home or cab.

Prince Charles Presents Medals

Soldiers from the Black Watch are to be presented with campaign medals from Prince Charles, the Duke of Rothesay following their return from deployment in Afghanistan. The senior royal will present the medal at Fort George, near Inverness, where 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS) is based. Five members of the battalion died during the seven-month tour. Prince Charles is the royal Colonel of the battalion.

Despite being flown to hospital by air ambulance, the young victim of a fall from a tractor died a short time later. Ellie Mae Shaw was the daughter of a champion horse racing trainer and was fatally injured on a tractor at her family's training yard in Leicestershire, police confirmed. Derek Shaw's daughter was just 15-months-old amd had been sitting on the vehicle with her father when the accident happened.

Fire Stations' Upgrade Could Stall

Fire station refurbishments in London could be delayed because the sale of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority's (LFEPA) old headquarters has been held up, the London Assembly has heard. The Assembly's Budget and Performance Committee heard that fire station upgrades at Kentish Town, New Cross, Feltham, West Norwood and Knightsbridge are affected initially. LFEPA's programme for station upgrades is dependent on receiving £10 million in both 2010/11 and 2011/12 from the sale of the property. However, delays in obtaining planning permissions has meant the proceeds are not yet available for LFEPA's future capital spending plan.

Bereaved Have Photos Stolen

Precious family photos have been lost during a burglary at the home of a bereaved family in Dudley. Several items were stolen when a burglar targeted a house on Newbridge Road, Wall Heath on Sunday 17 January. A window was forced open some time between 2pm and 7.45pm and a search was made of the house. The property is home to the Carr family, who lost their 32-year-old daughter to cancer in February last year. Amongst the personal items taken was a silver-coloured Siemens laptop, which contained many photos of their daughter, Lynda. DC Marc Bullas, from Halesowen CID, said: "We appeal directly to the person responsible, or anyone who may have been offered such a laptop for sale, to examine your conscience and contact police."
