Govt Unveils Data Site
Internet inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee is behind the formation of a new UK Government online data bank, which launched today.
The website, data.gov.uk, gives the public unprecedented and free access to state information.
Sir Tim worked with Digital Britain Minister Stephen Timms and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, of University of Southampton, to develop the site.
Prior to today's launch, 2400 registered developers were given access to a preview version of the site, so they could offer feedback and start experimenting with the data.
Mr Timms said freeing up public data will create major new opportunities for businesses.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for UK firms to secure better value for money in service delivery and to develop innovative services which will help to grow the economy."
Sir Tim said making public data available for re-use increases accountability and transparency.
"Government data should be a public resource. By releasing it, we can unlock new ideas for delivering public services, help communities and society work better."
Prof Shadbolt said the next few weeks and months will be spent building on the site's current functions.
