Charges Over Edinburgh Handbag Snatch

A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged handbag snatch that happened in Craigmillar area of Edinburgh on the 22nd January. A 62-year-old woman was taken to the ERI for treatment on a shoulder injury following the incident in the Bingham Tunnel. The man was scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.

Appeal Over Illegal Timbering

Police in South Wales have appealed for information after a number of trees were cut down in Rhondda woodland. Forestry Commission officers were called to an incident on the forest track behind Vicarage Terrace, Cwmparc, on Friday, January 29 following a complaint that trees has been left in dangerous positions. It appears that unknown individuals had cut down several pine trees, blocking the track in the process. Sergeant Andrew Scourfield, who is currently seconded to Forestry Commission Wales, said: "This incident could have resulted in serious injury or worse, if one of these trees had fallen on a walker or cyclist," he continued "Not only are the people responsible for this stupid act putting the public and forest workers’ lives at risk they are also committing a criminal offence by damaging Forestry Commission property."

New Cumbria Police Chief

A West Cumbrian man with more than 17 years policing experience has started as the area’s new Chief Inspector in charge of Uniformed Police Officers and Criminal Justice. Chief Inspector Justin Bibby has taken over from CI Mairi Stamper who has moved to a new post within the Structures Review Implementation Team. Speaking about his new role, CI Bibby said: "I’ve lived in West Cumbria all my life and it will always be special to me. The people here have faced some real challenges over the past few months and have shown how community spirit and determination always prevails over adversity; it’s a real privilege to have the opportunity to work for them."

Multiple Merseyside Burglary Arrests

A total of 174 arrests have been made as a result of an operation to tackle burglary on Merseyside. The operation, which ran from Monday, 18 January to Monday, 1 February, saw a number of police initiatives in place across the force. Supt Rob Carden, who led the operation said: "I am pleased with the results of this operation, but we will not be complacent. We will be continuing to drive home the message that we take burglary very seriously and we are determined to do all we can to prevent burglaries in our area and catch those responsible."

Dedicated ITV News Channel axed
ITV has announced that following a "strategic review" it is to invest £2 million in its news programming but the axe has fallen on its 24-hour rolling ITV News Channel. The company said that the decision came after a review of the network’s news services as part of an evaluation of the future requirements for ITV news up to 2010 and beyond.

The newly branded Ireland Police Rugby team will take on a British Police Select Team at Newforge in Belfast later today. The Ireland Police Rugby Team is a combination of members of An Garda Síochána and the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Sky News Cameraman Killed In Egypt
A Sky news cameraman has been shot and killed while covering the ongoing violence in Cairo, Egypt. The broadcaster confirmed the death of 61-year-old Mick Deane on Wednesday. Mr Dean had worked for Sky for 15 years. In a statement, Head of Sky News, John Ryley, paid tribute to an "experienced journalist" and a "much-loved colleague".
