Tragic Farewell
The bodies of three British soldiers killed in Helmand, Afghanistan, have arrived back in the UK. Cpl John Moore, 22, from Lanarkshire, and Pte Sean McDonald, 26, who went to school in Edinburgh, died in an explosion near Sangin on Sunday. Warrant Officer Class 2 David Markland, from Euxton, Lancs, died in a blast in the Nad Ali district on Monday. The men's bodies were repatriated to RAF Lyneham. A private ceremony was held at the base's chapel.
Rhubarb! Rhubarb!
It has emerged that eating baked rhubarb could help fight cancer. New research has shown that baking British garden rhubarb for 20 minutes boosted its levels of anti-cancerous chemicals. Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University showed the polyphenols could kill or prevent the growth of cancer cells and could be used to develop new, less toxic treatments. It is the first study of the benefits of British rhubarb, specifically a variety grown in South Yorkshire.

A growing number of people want to see more grammar schools, despite a lack of support for them from the Labour and Conservative parties, a study suggests. A survey commissioned by the National Grammar Schools Association (NGSA) found

People in England's poorest areas live an average of seven years less than those in the richest ones, says a major report on health inequalities. Epidemiologist Sir Michael Marmot, says the NHS must spend much more on preventing illness. He has called for an increase in the minimum wage to allow everyone to have a healthy lifestyle. Health Secretary Andy Burnham has welcomed the government-commissioned report, but said more work was needed. The Marmot Review shows that although life expectancy has risen in poor and rich areas, inequalities persist.

£1bn is being unlocked to fund the Department of Education's free school meals commitment. The news, announced by deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, follows an announcement in September that every child in reception, year 1 and year 2 in state-funded schools will receive a free school lunch.

Fifty of England’s top public schools have broken competition law by exchanging information about fees, the Office of Fair Trading has announced. Following an investigation lasting more than two years, the OFT found that pupils’ parents ended up paying higher fees as a result of the information-sharing.

Renewed Appeal In 1995 School Teacher Murder Investigation
A fresh appeal for information has been issued 20 years after the murder of a Walthamstow school teacher. Joy Hewer was sexually assaulted and stabbed in an attack at her flat in Walthamstow on Tuesday, 17 October 1995. No one has ever been charged with her murder.
