Mussel Farm Tragedy Probed

Last weekend saw a man being killed after he was trapped beneath a fork lift truck at a mussel farm in Shetland. Emergency services were called to Baltasound Mussel Factory at Ordale on the island of Unst on Saturday morning. Fire crews used an airbag to move the machinery but the man died at the scene. Northern Constabulary said it had begun an investigation but the death was not being treated as suspicious. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Inquest Into Policeman's Death

An inquest into the death of a police officer who was shot during a training exercise in Manchester has begun. Pc Ian Terry, 32, was shot in the chest by a colleague as Greater Manchester Police's firearms unit practiced in a disused factory in June 2008. The father-of-two from Burnley was playing the role of a criminal fleeing in a car when he was shot. Coroner Nigel Meadows expects the hearing to last up to five weeks.

Another Arrest Over Grave Vandalism

Police investigating the vandalism of Muslim graves in south Manchester have made another arrest. A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage and has been bailed until 10 March 2010 pending further inquiries. Earlier this month a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage and was bailed until 11 March 2010 pending further inquiries. Officers are investigating three incidents at Southern Cemetery in October and November 2009, when several headstones were pushed over and vandalised.

Powys Tesco Checks In

The leading supermarket, Tesco is expected to open a new store in Powys after facing a legal threat from a council. The store in Newtown had been due to open before Christmas, but road works on the site were not finished. Powys council threatened the company with a court injunction and it decided to delay its launch, apologising for any inconvenience. It will now open on 22 February.

Bishops Meet Pope Over Abuse Scandal

A two-day meeting between Irish bishops and the Pope Benedict XVI has begun in the Vatican over the shocking revelations on clerical child abuse in Ireland. The talks, which are believed to unprecedented, involve 24 senior Irish clergymen discussing the matter with Pope after being called to the Vatican in the wake of the sexual abuse revelations. Four bishops have already resigned over revelations contained within the Murphy Report, the revealed "systematic" cover ups of child abuse over three decades by the Catholic hierarchy in the Archdiocese of Dublin. Last night, the meetings which began at 8am this morning were described by the Primate of All-Ireland Cardinal Seán Brady as "one step in a process…which will lead to a journey of repentance, renewal and reconciliation".

Arrest In Little Stars Nursery Abuse Probe
Child abuse is back in focus with news today that a 20-year-old nursery worker has been arrested on suspicion of abuse on a child. Police said the man was employed as an assistant at the Little Stars Nursery in Nechells. They said that the man, from Nechells, Birmingham, was taken into custody in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Arrest At 'Abuse' Nursery
Police investigating alleged abuse at a Nottinghamshire nursery have detained one person in relation to an alleged sexual offence. Authorities closed Rocking Horse Nursery in Plumtree last week following allegations children had sustained 'physical injuries'.

Clifford Denies 'Damaging And Untrue' Allegations
Max Clifford, the celebrity PR consultant, has denied allegations of historical sexual abuse, saying the charges are “damaging and totally untrue. Speaking outside Belgravia police station after being bailed he said that anyone who knew him would have "no doubt that I would never act in the way I have today been accused".

Adam's Brother 'Won't Get Fair Trial'
Sinn Fein President Gerry Adam's 'wanted' brother is insisting that he won't get a fair trial across the border in Northern Ireland. This is one of the grounds of objection being raised by Liam Adams over an attempt by authorities in Northern Ireland to extradite him on sex abuse charges.
