Avoid 'Showroom Tax', Says Website
Buyers of 4x4s, large family cars and people carriers should buy nearly-new to avoid being stung by new 'Showroom Tax' charges that come into force today, (1 April).
That's according to independent consumer motoring website, ww.honestjohn.co.uk.
"It's these buyers who stand to lose the most with the introduction of the so-called 'showroom tax', which was originally announced by Alistair Darling in the 2008 Budget," said Dan Harrison, Editor of honestjohn.co.uk.
"Buyers of new cars in Bands A-G don't have anything to worry about as Road Tax for the first year is either free or same rate as it would be for an existing owner.
"It's buyers of cars in Bands F-M who can really make big savings if they're prepared to shop around and consider nearly-new instead of new.
"It's possible to get a 10-plate car with delivery miles without the tax if you're prepared to buy nearly new. Buy from a car supermarket and you're likely to see savings on the list price too."
The honestjohn.co.uk research has found a car discounter offering a pre-registered 10-plate Subaru Impreza 2.5 WRX STi with delivery miles.
Under the new system, a buyer would pay £950 in tax from a Subaru dealer, but the savvy buyer who shops around for a nearly-new one will pay just £435 – more than £500 less.

New plans set to get first time buyers on property ladder
Proposals to make better use of public sector land and help first time buyers have been outlined by the Deputy Prime Minister today. Smarter use of public sector-owned land and driving down spiralling construction costs would help people get onto the housing ladder, John Prescott said. Since 2003 the number of first time buyers has fallen by 27%.
