Killer Jailed For 22 Years

A violent killer who stabbed a father-of-two to death must serve a minimum of 22 years in prison.

Michael Bowden has been sentenced to life imprisonment at the Old Bailey this morning after a jury took just 30 minutes to find him guilty of murder yesterday.

Bowden stabbed a stranger to "release his rage" at not being able to get through to his girlfriend's phone.

Paul Martin, 25, of Blackheath, was stabbed five times in the "unprovoked attack" last March in Greenwich Church Street, Greenwich, south-east London.

The Killer denied murder claiming diminished responsibility due to his bipolar disorder.

On the night of the murder Mr Martin had been out with his girlfriend and another couple in Greenwich.

As they were waiting to go home Bowden came out of a nearby phone box and started verbally abusing Mr Martin for no reason before stabbing him five times.

He died later that morning in hospital despite having undergone emergency surgery.

Sentencing Bowden, of Marden Square, Bermondsey, to life imprisonment, Judge Giles Forrester said: "For some reason you took against Paul Martin, who just happened to be standing nearby.

"It was a tragic and a cruel twist of fate which caused your paths to cross.

"The consequences of your conduct that night cannot be overstated.

"A woman has lost her loving partner, two young children have lost their father and a mother has lost her devoted son."

At the time of the attack Bowden was on bail for an allegation of violence in a corner shop in November 2008.

Det Insp Chris Stanley said: "I am pleased that this thug, Michael Bowden, is going to jail for the brutal and unprovoked murder of Paul Martin."
