Tweet On The Beat

Officers from Greater Manchester Police are on the tweet in a bid to highlight how much time officers spend on "social work".

In a live 24-hour blog, details of every call, received by Manchester police, will appear on social network site Twitter.

The Police blog began at 5am this morning. By 8.30am, 360 calls from the public were already logged, with 22 arrests made.

Many of the calls were of a trivial nature. One incident concerns damage to a lamp-post in Tameside, while call 349 reports suspicious noises in a loft in Salford.

Chief Constable Peter Fahy commented: "Policing is often seen in very simple terms, with cops chasing robbers and locking them up.

"However, the reality is that this accounts for only part of the work they have to deal with.

"A lot of what we do is dealing with social problems such as missing children, people with mental health problems and domestic abuse.

"Often these incidents can be incredibly complex and need a lot of time, resource and expertise.

"I am not saying that we shouldn't deal with these types of incidents, far from it, but what I am saying is that this work is not recognised in league tables and measurements - yet is a huge part of what we do."

Ahead of next week's government's spending review, the force are preparing to face massive budget cuts. The tweeting operation hopes to highlight to Politicians the necessary workload police have to deal with.
