THINK! Team Up With Football Clubs
An innovative new partnership between the THINK! child road safety campaign and four football clubs was launched today by Road Safety Minister Mike Penning. Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United will use their after-school clubs and activities in schools and on match days to help youngsters learn about road safety with THINK!'s Tales of the Road materials. The new initiative will focus on helping six to 11-year-olds learn how to find safe places to cross the road after evidence showed that this is a key factor in helping children stay safe on the roads. This work will be supported by local road safety officers and council road safety programmes. In addition, THINK! will distribute exercise books with road safety activities to primary schools across the country in January 2011.
Gas Company Fined After Car Rolls Over
A gas transportation company has been fined £20,000 after a car flipped on its side when it hit a metal plate during road works. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted Southern Gas Networks plc following the incident on the Isle of Wight. During road works on Foreland Road, Bembridge in April 2008, workers lifted a large metal road plate using an excavator ready to be moved later. A car hit the plate flipping on its side, leaving the driver with severe bruising. The driver had to be cut from the car by the fire service following the incident and the car was written off. The company pleaded guilty to breaching regulations 2007 at a previous hearing. An investigation by HSE found that the 2.5 metre-long plate, used to cover trenches in the road, had been raised six to eight inches from the ground, to make it easier to be collected later. The investigation found that the road plate was protruding around two feet beyond a line of parked cars into oncoming traffic when the car hit it. Southern Gas Networks plc was also ordered to pay costs of £13,523.
Self-Employed Reminded To Report Income
Self-employed tax credit claimants are being reminded that they should let HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) know their total profits for 2009/10 as soon as possible. In the most recent alert it was highlighted that failing to provide the correct details could lead to an overpayment, whilst supplying incorrect information could even lead to a penalty. Letters will start to land on doorsteps this week urging claimants to contact HMRC as soon as they know their final income figure for the previous tax year - and no later than 31 January 2011. The amount that tax credits claimants receive can change as their situations change. When they renew their claims, the self-employed can give HMRC an estimate of their income. Where an estimate has been provided, they have until 31 January to inform HMRC of the actual figure. Failure to inform HMRC of changes can result in overpayment, which means claimants will have to pay back some of the money they’ve received. They could also face a penalty and, in cases of deliberate fraud, criminal prosecution and imprisonment. As part of a wider government crackdown, HMRC and the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) last month published a strategy designed to tackle error and fraud in benefits and credits.
