Gurkhas' Launch First Summer Helmand Operation

A search operation in an area thought to be a Taliban safe haven has been carried out by soldiers from 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR) in their first major operation since recently arriving in Helmand province. Members of the Afghan National Army and Police along with soldiers from 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles entered a compound near the village of Shin Kalay in Nad 'Ali district. Operation TORA GORGA was carried out by soldiers from 2 RGR's B Company along with members of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Police. They searched a series of compounds near the village of Shin Kalay in Nad 'Ali district which had been identified as insurgent 'bed-downs' and used by insurgents to launch ambushes from. The operation began with the ISAF and Afghan forces first searching people on a nearby bridge used as a key crossing point by locals, before moving on to the compounds. 2 RGR's first major operation is seen by the troops as the beginning of what will likely be a very busy summer.

Driver Bailed Following Croydon Collision

Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious injury collision in Croydon. Around 9.10pm last Monday a double-decker bus collided with a male pedestrian at Addiscombe Road, near Sandilands tram stop. The injured man was taken by ambulance to St George's Hospital in Tooting, suffering head injuries. His condition is described as serious. He is aged in his mid-60s and lives locally. Anyone who witnessed the incident, involving a number 194 bus is being asked to come forward. The 63-year-old bus driver was arrested on suspicion of careless driving and taken to a south London police station. He was later bailed to return on 12 July pending further inquiries.

Scots Soldiers Welcomed Home

Soldiers from The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS), who have recently returned from Afghanistan, are marching through the streets of Scotland this week to celebrate their homecoming. In keeping with tradition dating back hundreds of years, around 400 soldiers from the battalion paraded through the streets of Ayr yesterday morning and Glasgow yesterday afternoon to show their thanks for the support that members of the public have given them during the past seven months. The battalion also marched through Penicuik at lunchtime today. The final parade will also see members of the battalion receiving their Afghanistan Operational Medals during a private ceremony at Glencorse Barracks. The Regimental Colonel, Prince Andrew, will take the salute as the troops march through Penicuik.

Soldiers Killed In Anti-Taliban Offensives
Three more British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed. The separate incidents happened during one of the biggest offensives launched against the Taliban by UK troops in Helmand province - Operation Panther's Claw.

Two Die In Deadly Afghanistan Attack
There's news of further casualties in Afghanistan overnight and while two soldiers from The Parachute Regiment have been killed in a shoot-out, there are also local reports that a third soldier - who comes from Co Antrim in Northern Ireland - is seriously ill with stomach wounds sustained in the same tragic incident.

Inquest Into Death Of Senior Officer
The inquest into the death of the most senior officer to be killed in Afghanistan and his teenage colleague will begin today. Lt Col Rupert Thorneloe, 39, of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, was in charge of more than 1,000 soldiers. He is the most senior British Army officer to be killed in action since the Falklands.

Two British Soldiers Killed Are Named
Two British soldiers killed in an explosion in Afghanistan have been named by the Ministry of Defence. Private Ben Ford, 18, and Private Damian Wright, 23, were both from the 2nd Battallion The Mercian Regiment. They were taking part in a routine reassurance patrol when the WMIK Landrover vehicle they were travelling in was caught in an explosion.
