Man Jailed For Girlfriend's Murder

A man has been jailed for life for murdering his girlfriend at their home in Barnet. Houssam Djemaa, 23, was today found guilty of murdering Jacqueline Barrett, 34, at their home in Anderson Court, Whitefield Avenue, north west London, on 11 December 2010. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, to serve a minimum of 15 years. During a week-long trial, the court heard how Djemma, who had been Jacqueline Barrett’s live-in boyfriend for six months, called 999 at 4.45am, stating that he had attacked his girlfriend and that she was unconscious and not breathing. Police and the London Ambulance Service attended the address to find Jacqueline, a mother of three, collapsed and bleeding on the kitchen floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Djemaa was arrested at the address and later charged on 12 December 2010 with murder. A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as asphyxia, haemorrhaging and compression of the neck and blunt force trauma. Better Care Through Better Commissioning Needed, Say Doctors

Larne based GP Dr Brian Dunn has highlighted the need for better commissioning of services in Northern Ireland.

Speaking this week at a conference of family doctors in London, Dr Dunn said:
“We have welcomed the appointment of Mr Edwin Poots as health Minister and look forward to working constructively with him to ensure the best possible care for our patients.

One major issue Minister Poots will have to address at an early stage is whether or not he will introduce GP-led commissioning.

It is our opinion that there has been no needs-based commissioning of health services; rather Trusts have been given huge sums of money in the hope of getting the same outcomes as last year.

” Dr Dunn continued:

“Indeed we know that Northern Ireland spends £22 more per head of population in secondary care compared to England, yet health outcomes do not appear to be significantly better.

We need local commissioning of health services with decisions made and contracts for service delivery based on the needs of people, resulting in better care”.
