Primary School Teacher Sentenced For Sexual Offences
A North Somerset primary school teacher has been given an indeterminate public protection order for a catalogue of sexual abuse against young girl pupils in his care. He will only be released when it is safe to do so and this equates to a determinate sentence of 24 years.
Nigel Leat, 51 and from Bristol was sentenced today at Bristol Crown Court after he pleaded guilty in May, to 36 offences of sexual abuse against five victims.
The charges included attempted rape of a child under the age of 13 years old, causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, sexual assault child under the age of 13, voyeurism, possession of indecent photographs of children and possession of extreme pornographic images.
Leat was arrested in December 2010 following a disclosure from a child in his class to her parent. Following a video interview Leat was arrested and brought into custody where he denied all offences that had been put to him.
He was charged with four offences on December 14 and placed before the courts, where he has been remanded into prison since.
As the major police inquiry progressed and numerous USB sticks and computers were examined by specialist officers it became clear there were multiple incidents of abuse against a number of victims within the school environment. Leat was produced from prison where he refused to comment.
He was charged with a further 18 offences and further charged with another 16 some weeks later.
Passing sentence, His Honour Judge Neil Ford QC said: "The sentence passed today reflects the totality of the offending and not just the indictments. You were in a position of authority and trust and it is clear from the footage I have seen that the children were subjected to extreme sexual behaviour. These children were too young to understand the significance of this. Your manipulation was clever, cunning and wicked."
