Stabbed Salford Burglar Was On Bail
It has been confirmed that a burglar stabbed to death during a break-in at a Salford house, was on police bail following a separate suspected burglary.
Earlier this month, John Leonard Bennell, 27, from Hyde, was arrested by police.
Following this week's incident, Salford homeowner, Peter Flanagan, 57, remains in custody over Mr Bennell's attempted murder.
Mr Flanagan's son, 27, and his son's girlfriend, 21, have now been released.
At midnight on Wednesday, four masked men attempted to get into a house in Ethel Avenue in Pendlebury. After the alarm was raised, police also received reports that a group of men had been seen carrying an injured man onto Hospital Road. On arrival at Hospital Road, police found a 26-year-old man with stab wounds. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Greater Manchester Police Major Incident Team is investigating and officers from Salford are working in the area and with the community to provide reassurance.
Salford Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan said: "Clearly this is a shocking incident and a man has lost his life. However, I can reassure the community that we will thoroughly investigate what happened last night and do not believe that members of the public are at risk. I would urge anyone who knows something to speak to officers from the Major Incident Team and anyone else who has other concerns can speak to my officers, who will be providing an increased presence to provide the community with reassurance."
