Officer Jailed For Assault

A Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officer has been sentenced to 18 months after being found guilty of actual bodily harm on Thursday. Police Constable Edward Prince, 31, based on Croydon borough, had pleaded not guilty at Southwark Crown Court to causing actual bodily harm but was convicted following his trial. A Metropolitan Police Service spokesman said: "Any instance where the conduct of our staff is alleged to have fallen below the standards of behaviour expected is treated extremely seriously by the MPS and will be robustly investigated." The case follows complaints made regarding excessive force used by Prince during the arrest of a man in his 20s on Friday, 6 November 2009 in Brighton Road, Croydon. Officers from the MPS Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) investigated after receiving a complaint by a member of the public and a report of wrong doing made by another police officer, regarding Prince using excessive force.

Child Sex Offence Convictions Up 60%

The number of people convicted of sex offences on children under 16 in England and Wales has risen by nearly 60% in six years, the BBC has found. The corporation said a freedom of information request to the Ministry of Justice found 1,363 people were convicted in 2005, while in 2010 it was 2,135. Child protection groups say the number is relatively small and it remains an under-reported crime. The head of strategy and development at the NSPCC, Lisa Harker, said: "It's difficult to tell if these figures indicate an increase in the number of sex offences being committed against children.

Teenager Jailed After Killing Girl For Dare

A teenage boy is facing 14 years in jail for killing a girl after being dared by his friend. Swansea Crown Court heard on Friday that Joshua Davies lured 15-year-old Rebecca Aylward into woodland near Bridgend in South Wales where he killed her with a rock. Davies, who was found guilty at the end of July, was called "devious, calculating and controlling" by Mr Justice Lloyd Jones. During proceedings the court were read a text exchange between Davies and a friend that said: "What would you do if I actually did kill her?". His friend replied: "Oh, I would buy you a breakfast", but it was believed the friend did not think Davies' threat was serious.
