Occupy Protest Losing St Paul's Money
St Paul's Cathedral could be forced to close as activists continue to occupy the churchyard staging an anti-capitalist protest, officials say. Members of the Occupy London Stock Exchange movement have been camping in the area since Saturday. Now Cathedral officials are saying they are to review its policy of remaining open despite the protest camp. Police had stepped in on Saturday to attempt to separate the activists, however, St Paul's Minister Dr Giles Fraser told the police the cathedral "didn't need that kind of protection". However, an increase in their numbers was now posing "a risk to the life of the cathedral", the statement said. On the Occupy London Facebook page, protesters asked supporters to bring supplies as they continued their part of the world-wide movement against the blurring lines between politics and the financial sector. An Occupy protestor wrote: "Hi supporters! A quick request from the occupation: we need drinking water! Preferably in the largest bottles possible (such as 2 liters), so as to reduce waste. Would any of you be willing to commit to contributing?" The protests has been inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York, similar rallies are taking place in hundreds of major cities around the world.
Gang Jailed For 'Crash For Cash' Scam
A team of criminals who made nearly £2 million pounds from false crash claims has been sentenced to a total of over 12 years imprisonment. The criminal gang staged 'crashes' in their business premises prior to submitting claims to the insurers for services that were not provided. These claims were for recovery and storage as well as replacement hire vehicles. At Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, Mohammed Samsul Haque, 26, a company director, of Lydford Road, London, W9 received five years in prison and was disqualified for 10 years as a company director; Rosul Yusuf, 33, a car salesman of Sandhurst Drive, Ilford, Essex was handed four years imprisonment and disqualified for five years as a company director; Shalim Miah, 29, of Rampayne Street, London, received two years imprisonment and was disqualified for five years as a company director; Nazruislam Rahman, 32, unemployed, of Turner Avenue, London, N15 was sentenced to a suspended sentence of a year’s imprisonment and 140 hours of unpaid work; Noveed Akthtar, 40, a surveyor of Cochrane Court, Leyton Grange Estate, London, was handed a suspended sentence of a year’s imprisonment; Halimur Rashid, 28, a car hire manager, of Leamington Gardens, Ilford, Essex was sentenced to fifteen months imprisonment. The court heard the team of six staged over 120 fraudulent claims to insurers for accidents that never took place - so called 'cash for crash' scams - making £1.17million for themselves, with insurance companies paying out a total of £1.91 million.
Knifepoint Robberies Up 7%
Robberies at knifepoint are up 7% in the last year police chiefs have said. The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) said the rise in robberies had resulted from thieves targeting mobile phones, which can be sold on the black market abroad for twice the price. Police chiefs said the increase was a "cause for concern" as the latest figures showed the easing of the falling levels of overall crime continued after sustained reductions since the mid-1990s. Along with the rise in the number of robberies involving knives, the figures showed the overall number of robberies also rose by 3%, up to 76,786.
