Two On Trial Over Stephen Lawrence Murder
Two men will appear in the Old Bailey on Monday charged with the murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993.
Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, charged with the high profile murder of black student Stephen Lawrence. Both deny the charges.
The trial is expected to last until Christmas.
The 18-year-old A-level student was stabbed to death by a gang of white youths in Eltham, south-east London, on 22 April 1993. After a long running police investigation failed to prosecute anyone for the murder, an inquiry was held into how the Metropolitan Police were handling race motivated crime.
The subsequent MacPherson Report accused police of "institutional racism" and incompetence, and also triggered major reform of the justice system in England and Wales.
His death and the circumstances of the case led to his family establishing the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, which works to "advance social justice, community cohesion and alleviate poverty".
A jury is due to be picked later on Monday, although the case will not open until later this week.
The trial before Mr Justice Treacy is expected to last around two months.
