Cocaine Use Peaks In Europe
Cocaine use in Europe has peaked after its steady over the past decade, according to the European Union's drug agency. The UK is still at the top of the European league table for cocaine use per person, while experts claim the economic climate will limit use of the expensive and addictive drug. The annual report from the Lisbon-based European monitoring centre for drugs and drug addiction, published on Tuesday, found illicit drug use across the EU had stablised. However, new threats from 'legal highs' and other synthetic drugs threatened to fill the gap. The centre said 39 new substances had been identified so far this year via the European early warning system on top of the 41 notified for the whole of 2010. There are no signs of decline in their use and more than 150 new substances are being monitored by the authorities. The EU drugs agency said this rapid appearance of new substances is being driven by a record 600 online retailers willing to despatch an order for what purports to be 'psychoactive substances' to at least one other EU state.
Commission Right To Criticise Letwin - Labour
Labour's Shadow Cabinet Office Minister has said the Information Commission was right to criticise Oliver Letwin, for dumping his Government papers in a park rubbish bin. Commenting on the commissions report, Michael Dugher, said: "This Government is desperately out of touch, but when people tried to tell Oliver Letwin what was happening, he dumped their letters in a park bin. That's not just out of touch. It's out to lunch. "It's good that Oliver Letwin has signed a commitment to stop dumping confidential personal information in park bins. But it's shocking that the Tory minister in charge of overseeing all Government policy should have acted with such disdain in the first place." Oliver Letwin was caught dumping the papers in a park adjacent to Government buildings by the Daily Mirror last month. He claimed the papers contained no confidential material. Mr Dugher added: "With both Oliver Letwin and Vince Cable taking such a lax approach to data security, it's right that the Information Commissioner has reminded him of his responsibilities – but he shouldn’t have to."
Debate On Petrol Prices To Begin
MPs on Tuesday will debate a stay on fuel price rises amid a public outcry over costs. The motion from Tory MP Robert Halfon's began as an e-petition signed by more than 100,000 people and supported by more than 100 MPs. The government originally planmed to increase fuel duty by 3p a litre in January. Petrol prices have doubled since 2000, causing consternation among road users.
