Reward For Stolen Ruby Remembrance Poppy

An appeal has been launched for public assistance after the theft of a £25k gem-encrusted 'Remembrance Poppy' in West London.

Police said on Thursday they were asking for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward following the theft at 7am on Saturday, 12 November.

Thieves had taken a handbag containing the 'Garrard' ruby and diamond brooch at the Copthorne Tara Hotel, Scarsdale Place, W6. The owner of the bag, a woman in her 60s, immediately reported the theft to the police.

The handbag, minus its contents, was recovered by a member of the public, later that day outside the hotel.

Officers from Kensington and Chelsea CID are investigating the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Williams said: "Any theft is upsetting and inconvenient to deal with, and in this case the stolen item has significant meaning and value. We hope given the poppy's importance and what it represents to our armed services, the thief will look to their conscience and help us return it to the rightful owner.

"We urge anyone who knows where this poppy is to call us or Crimestoppers anonymously."

Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room on 020 8246 0145, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Crimestoppers is offering a reward of £5,000 for information provided through their anonymous number 0800 555 111 that leads to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the individual/s responsible for this specific crime and the recovery of the stolen brooch.
